Humanly: Mini Design Documentary

In 2017, my cohort from the Information Design program at Mount Royal University completed our capstone course. In this course, we combined the skills we had learned from our previous studies to address a ‘wicked problem.’ At the end of the semester, we presented our projects, including the understandings we had developed of each problem and potential future solutions, at an exhibition titled Humanly.

I had the opportunity to create a mini documentary about the course that was presented at the showcase. This movie helped attendees to understand the process that had come before what they were seeing that evening.

Creating this movie required learning about film making, interviewing all of my classmates and our professors, shooting process related b-roll, and editing everything together to tell the story of our course. It was interesting for me to see how similar the process of creating this film was to so many of the other information design projects that I have done.

Despite the similarities, making a movie was a new type of project for me and I really enjoyed the opportunity to develop this skill set. The most rewarding part of this was getting to capture people’s excitement. While getting my peers to agree to be in front of the camera wasn’t always easy, it was worth it as they got more comfortable during our conversations and their eyes lit up as they talked about things they are passionate about.
